Part 159: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Latter: Witness Intimidation

The poll was kind of a trick question. Did you catch the option at the bottom?

The right answer, is to admit we have no proof. And really, we have nothing here. Or at least, nothing else we have is something I can currently use against Gant, with what I know now.

Music: Silence

Hmph!

See, Udgey?

In that case...

Sound: Realization

Wait, what? Were we supposed to present something after all?

Music: Suspense

What?
Sound: Light Bulb

quote:

Original line: "I don't gamble unless the stakes are high!" Doesn't make as much sense.

Sound: Light Bulb

Okay Udgey, I'll leave the rest to you!
Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

Gant fades out, and we fade to black...

I warned you earlier, Mr. Wright.

...

Music: Silence

Sound: Guilty

You can see the health bar in the upper-right, with the last two health sections glowing red on and off. Normally, that's a sign of an impending penalty (and shows up on crosses and certain other prompts).

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Drama Pound

As we panic about an impending penalty, Edgeworth intercedes...

quote:

So what if we tried to present something?

(I can't let him squirm his way out of this!)

Music: Silence

(I've got to keep the pressure on!)

Yes, Your Honor. I do have such evidence.

Sound: Gavel

Music: Logic and Trick

Then please hurry up and present it. Just remember,

it better prove Chief Gant murdered Detective Goodman beyond a shadow of a doubt!

That line is a pretty clear hint that we leapt off the cliff too soon. We get an evidence prompt here, but no matter what we pick...

So...

Er, what exactly is this evidence?
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Silence

It's proof. As to whether or not it's enough to demonstrate the Chief's guilt...

I'll let you be the judge!
Sound: Whack

But... I AM the judge.
Sound: Realization

Oh, right...

Well, what do you think, Your Honor?
Sound: Realization

What I think, Mr. Wright,

is I'm going to be late for lunch.
Sound: Damage 2

Another penalty trap, since there was no hint of a penalty in the choice to present evidence (there was when choosing what evidence to present, but it was too late at that point).

Music: Logic and Trick

(I guess it wasn't enough...)

Please, Your Honor! Give me just a little longer to consider!

Hmm...

I'll say it again, Mr. Wright. Damon Gant is the current Chief of Police.

From there we go through the rest of the scene leading up to the original prompt at the start of this update, to allow us to go down a better path next time.

Sound: Realization

Up until the last moment I thought there would be some dramatic objection and entrance from someone with more evidence to prevent Gant from leaving (maybe Ema?), but apparently we really are just going to let him go. Instead, we'll go after someone else...

Mr. Edgeworth? What do you mean!?
Sound: Light Bulb

We haven't yet had the honor of hearing her testimony.

(A lady who knows the truth... Another witness!)

But Chief Gant has invoked his right to refuse to testify!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Realization

Music: Suspense

raised in this trial. Someone right in this very room!

Mr. Edgeworth!

Who is this person!?
Sound: Whack

Hmph...

Why are you asking me, Your Honor?

Have you forgotten?

Sound: Gavel

Mr. Wright. Does such a witness exist?

(But we can't just stop now!)

Only one person makes sense here, the hints aren't even really necessary.

In order to get our client off on the murder charge, we are going to have to get her to confess to conspiracy instead.

The defendant...
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Ms. Lana Skye!?
Sound: Drama Pound + Stab

Sound: Desk Slam

in accordance with a certain someone's orders!

Hmm...

Mr. Edgeworth...?

The prosecution has no objections, Your Honor.

Sound: Gavel

quote:

Get this choice wrong, and...

Sound: Desk Slam

I thought we were walking the same path together, Mr. Wright.

It appears somewhere along the way you got lost.

You'd better find your way back, Mr. Wright, or you'll be left behind!
Sound: Damage 2

Penalties all over the place in this segment.

(There's another "witness" who can expose Chief Gant's crime...)

(One whom we've all let stand at the sidelines...)

(Now that I think about it,)

(there's only one possible person!)

Sound: Gavel

Mr. Wright. Does such a witness exist?

We get the same lead-in to the witness selection from there; free to pick the correct answer this time.

Music: Trial

This court is now in re-

Sound: Realization

Huh?

Sound: Drama Pound

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Listen good, Lana!
Sound: Objection

(He's talking to Lana!)

there will be terrible consequences.
Sound: Realization

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

That's right...

Sound: Guilty

I guess we're just letting murderers openly threaten witnesses in court now.

Ah!
Sound: Light Bulb

(This isn't good!)
Sound: Stab 2

Just something to think about...

Music: Silence

All right, then.
Sound: Light Bulb

I've got a lunch date to meet.
Sound: Whack

Even the judge can't believe what he just saw there.

...

Okay. If there aren't any further objections...
Sound: Light Bulb

this court is now in recess!

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

Yeah. Thanks to your help, Edgeworth.

Detective Gumshoe!
Sound: Light Bulb

Ha ha ha.

I'm not a "detective" anymore.

Oh yeah. Sorry about that...
Sound: Stab

Music: Silence

At your office!
Sound: Damage 2

My office...?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sure!

Sound: Objection

I'm in. Gumshoe is chicken soup for the soul.

Sound: Realization

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

Still...

Looks like we're all out of moves now.

Sound: Objection

It's not fair he has the right to refuse to testify!
Sound: Whack

Hmph.

Settle down, Wright.

Remember what the judge said?

Sound: Wipe

There are certain risks to be considered!
Sound: Realization

"Risks"... What did he mean by that?

It's simple.

the opposite also holds true.

Sound: Realization

Kind of a like the Fifth Amendment in the US. If you "plead the fifth" to avoid incriminating yourself, you also lose the right to speak in your defense. Wait, who was speaking there?

Music: Ema Skye ~ Turnabout Sisters Theme

Ema! Are you okay?
Sound: Light Bulb

I've been listening to the trial from the gallery.

(So she heard everything that's been going on.)

Um, Ema... I'm sorry for what I said before.

No, don't be. It was the truth.

She finally knows why her sister has been acting so strange the last two years.

"Relieved"?

Yeah...

Now I finally know what really happened.
Sound: Realization

To think that all this time...

And she did it all...

just to protect me.

everyone who knew her...

said she changed.

Perhaps...

it was easier that way for her.

What do you mean?

She must have shut herself up deep inside...

(That must be why she became so cold...)

It was all my fault.

Hey. Don't go blaming yourself now.
Sound: Whack

If you want to blame anyone, blame society, pal!
Sound: Whack

I... I see.

Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Silence

Ema, why don't you wait h-

Sound: Realization

!
Sound: Light Bulb

I want to be there...

when Lana tells the truth.

I guess it makes sense, but I wasn't expecting a separate chapter here.

Music: Jingle - It Can't End Here

So I guess Gant won't be testifying again. Will this episode be the first time we "convict" the murderer with someone else on the stand?
